In this drawing Daumier uses contour lines to define motion and outlines the subjects. The lines define the edge and outline the subjects. He uses thicker and darker lines for definition in the subjects especially with the man standing on the chair. The darker lines define the edge and shadow of the man.  Daumier uses many lines but the drawings do not look messy or sketched.
